As you may be aware, the Department for Education has announced changes to relationships and sex education (RSE), which come into effect for all schools from September 2020. Schools will be required to consult with parents when developing and reviewing their policies for Relationships Education and RSE, which will inform schools’ decisions on when and how certain content is covered. To initiate this consultation, we have set up a RSE Focus Group, which met for the first time this week; it was great to see such a good turn out from a cross section of our families. Effective consultation will give the space and time for our parents to input, ask questions and share concerns. We are keen to listen to your views before we make a reasonable decision on the way forward. What is taught, and how, is ultimately a decision for the school and consultation does not provide a parental veto on curriculum content.
We started with an introductory discussion and shared the draft guidance from the DfE.
We plan to discuss the guiding principles at our next meeting on Wednesday 10 July at 3.00 pm. If you couldn’t make the first meeting, please feel free to come along. The meeting will finish by the end of the school day.
